FAQs about Our Illustration Services
What is the process for book illustrations?
The illustration process begins with you receiving an illustration questionnaire where you can provide your preferences and select from various style options. Our illustrator will then complete one illustration and line art for the others. You can review these illustrations and suggest any necessary changes to ensure we are aligned with your vision. We will color the remaining line art once you are satisfied with the illustrations. The final step involves reviewing and approving the completed illustrations.
How long does the illustration process take?
The initial stage of creating illustrations takes 2-4 weeks typically. The timeline depends on the extent of alterations required and the time needed to review the illustrations. Custom illustrations and artwork may take additional time to ensure we deliver the highest quality product for our authors.
Can I communicate directly with the illustrator?
Your Publication Specialist will serve as the liaison between you and the illustrator. This setup ensures effective communication and coordination. Our specialized staff, including editors, designers, and marketers, focus on their respective areas of expertise and do not directly engage with authors.
I have a book series with illustrations. How does the process work in that case?
While we recommend authors focus on one book at a time, many authors have successfully worked on multiple books simultaneously. It is crucial to consider the time commitment to ensure all the books progress smoothly and are completed in a timely manner.
What choices do I have for illustrations?
Our illustrators specialize in various styles, including:
1. Cartoon or Humor: A fun and laughter-inducing style that can be used across different genres, including parodies and caricatures.
2. Fantasy Style: This style blends imagination and reality, often described as fanciful, dreamy, and wistful. It has a more mythical quality.
3. Juvenile or Whimsical: A colorful and playful style commonly used in children’s books and fairy tales. It can overlap with cartoon or humorous styles.
4. Naturalistic: This style portrays people and objects realistically, presenting them as they are.
5. Science Fiction: This style combines imagination with futuristic concepts, encompassing robots, technology, extraterrestrial lifeforms, time travel, and parallel universes.
Can my illustrations span across two facing pages?
Yes, this is known as a double-page spread. Unlike some publishers, we count the illustration as one image unless it is excessively complex.
Why is it necessary for me to complete an illustration questionnaire?
The illustration questionnaire allows you to convey your vision to the artist. Being detailed and thorough in your responses is crucial to ensuring that your timeline stays on track and that the illustrator understands your desired outcome.
Will the illustrator read my manuscript?
No, the illustrator will not read your manuscript, so the descriptions you provide in the illustration questionnaire are of utmost importance in conveying your vision to the artist.
